Before Brooklyn became Brooklyn, there was Breuckelen. Dutch settlers carried the name of Breukelen in the Netherlands across the Atlantic, where it became attached to a small settlement in New Netherland. Languages changed, governments changed and the settlement grew, but the Dutch origin remained embedded in the name.

The year 1646 gives the design its historical anchor. That was the year Breuckelen received official local recognition within New Netherland. It was one step in a much longer history that eventually led from a small Dutch colonial settlement to one of the world's best-known urban names.

That contrast gives the graphic its character. Brooklyn represents modern New York culture, but hidden inside the name is a connection to a small Dutch town beside the River Vecht.

The design avoids the familiar skyline, bridge and tourist-souvenir imagery. Instead, the Brooklyn name is presented through bold blackletter-inspired typography, giving the graphic a darker and more old-school character.
