MOKUM EST 1300 HEAVY SWEATER | AMSTERDAM UPSIDE DOWN

Mokum is not the Amsterdam from the postcard rack. It is the name that belongs to the city itself. A word passed through generations, neighbourhoods and street language until it became shorthand for Amsterdam with all the polish removed. The Mokum Est 1300 Heavy Sweater takes that local identity and quite literally turns it on its head.

The oversized graphic reads MOKUM with the smaller EST 1300 underneath, both intentionally rotated 180 degrees. Simple from a distance, slightly wrong when you look again. That is where the design gets its character.

THE CITY HAS ITS OWN NAME

Mokum comes from the Hebrew-Yiddish word for place and became an affectionate name for Amsterdam. It belongs to the same local visual language as the city's three crosses, neighbourhood loyalties and the habit of treating Amsterdam less like a destination and more like a state of mind. You do not need a canal house to understand it.

TURN THE CITY AROUND

The graphic avoids the usual souvenir treatment. No skyline, no bicycle, no tulips. Just the city's nickname in oversized lettering, deliberately upside down. The smaller EST 1300 refers to Amsterdam's early development as an increasingly independent town around that period. It is a design marker, not an official founding date.

THREE COLOURS, THREE ATTITUDES

Each sweater has its own print colour. White carries the graphic in red. Athletic Heather uses deep navy blue. Black gets the strongest contrast with a warm yellow print. The artwork and placement stay identical, so the choice is really about which version of Mokum you want to wear.

HEAVYWEIGHT AMSTERDAM

This new version moves the design onto our heavyweight sweater base. The 350 g/m² fabric has real substance, while the oversized unisex fit and dropped shoulders keep the shape relaxed. A soft brushed interior takes care of comfort when Amsterdam weather starts doing what Amsterdam weather does.

STYLING ADVICE

Keep it uncomplicated. Straight denim, loose trousers and simple sneakers are enough. White feels sharper, Athletic Heather has the classic sportswear mood, and Black gives the yellow graphic maximum impact. Whichever one you choose, it looks considerably less like Amsterdam souvenir wear and considerably more like something an Amsterdammer might actually keep.
